The second iteration of The Jewish Museum’s new series Masterpieces & Curiosities focuses on an important photograph in the collection by American photographer Diane Arbus. This captivating picture shows Eddie Carmel, a sideshow attraction billed by promoters as “The World’s Tallest Man,” as he struggles to stand upright in his parents’ Bronx apartment. By showing Arbus’s image and its mesmerizing subject in both historic and metaphorical contexts, this exhibition explores the symbolic implications of gigantism and hopes to elucidate our culture’s pervasive fascination with the extraordinary.
March 14, 2014 - August 3, 2014
