In the belief that in the bricks, grit, concrete, wood, plastic, cardboard, and corrugated iron of what we have built, there is much to be gleaned of our ethos, I attempted to look at South African structures not as architecture but as expressions of value. With this perspective in mind, I photographed structures for about ten years and then wrote extensive notes on them to provide a sense of their context. South Africa: The Structure of Things Then was published in 1998.
