The Master’s Degree in Jewish Art & Material Culture

The Master’s Degree in Jewish Art and Material Culture at the Graduate School, Jewish Theological Seminary, is designed to meet the need for professional personnel in the burgeoning field of Jewish art. Specifically, the program has the following aims: The program combines advanced courses in Jewish art and material culture with courses in Jewish studies and in general art history at nearby universities. The program includes museum internships at the Library of the Jewish Theological Seminary, with its peerless collection of Hebrew manuscripts and printed books, and at The Jewish Museum.


The Faculty

The program advisor is Dr. Vivian Mann whose areas of specialization include Jewish art and western medieval art. Dr. Mann holds the Morris and Eva Feld Chair of Judaica at the Jewish Museum as well as being the Director of the Manekin Institute for Jewish Art. Her noted publications and curatorships include A Tale of Two Cities: Jewish Life in Frankfurt and Istanbul 1750-1870 (The Jewish Museum, 1982); The Precious Legacy: Judaic Treasures from the Czechoslovak State Collections (Summit Books, 1983); and Gardens and Ghettos: The Art of Jewish Life in Italy (University of California Press, 1989). Her most recent work, Art and Aesthetics Through Jewish Eyes, was published by Cambridge University Press in 2003.
