Charlotte von Rothschild married Lionel, her cousin from London, when she was seventeen. The 1836 wedding was celebrated in Frankfurt, and this painting and its counterpart, Lionel Nathan de Rothschild as Bridegroom, were painted for the occasion. It shows Charlotte seated in front of Mount Vesuvius, a reference to the bank in Naples owned by her father. | |||||
