Europes urbanization offered new challenges and opportunities for the portrayal of city life. In 1887, Lesser Ury settled in Berlin. Here, his most characteristic work was inspired by the life and physical surroundings of the city, the people he observed, and the cityscapes with their rainy streets. His work often depicted the ephemeral phenomena of light and weather. In this painting, the movement of rushing pedestrians and horse-drawn carriages almost fade into the surrounding mist that rises from the shiny sidewalks. | |||||
