| Max Liebermann (German, 1847-1935) Bathing Boys, 1900 Oil on canvas Stiftung Stadtmuseum Berlin |
|||||
| After 1900, Max Liebermann infused his paintings with aspects of French Impressionism as he abandoned working-class themes and took up depictions of the leisured class partaking in such activities as polo, horseback riding, and seaside revelry. Bathing Boys evokes a carefree scene of boys frolicking in the sea, in which innocent youth exists in harmony with nature. Emancipation had opened up and guaranteed seemingly endless opportunities to Jews, including leisure and sporting activities. | |||||
