This picture is from Harlem Document, a project that Aaron Siskind undertook with members of the Photo League in 1936 to call attention to the hardships of the Depression on this African American community. The humanistic and psychologically charged depiction of individuals in poverty was in some ways self-reflective, as many of the League's photographers were living in run-down tenements themselves.
