		The picture seen here appeared in Sidewalk (2000), Jeff Mermelstein's book of photographs capturing the randomness and spontaneity of life on the streets of New York. It appears alongside such subjects as a smoking shoe, a pigeon with a bloody beak, and a model dressed only in lettuce leaves. In this photograph, a small dog is king of a pile of New York Times newspapers at a newstand-the only balanced element in an off-kilter world.
