We say today in a loud and clear voice, enough of blood and tears, enough.
- Yitzhak Rabin
Any consideration of art during the last few years must acknowledge the deep sense of loss surrounding Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin's assassination in November 1995. That moment destroyed the extraordinary aura of hope and liberation that had flowered briefly in Israel, when peace seemed attainable. The shock and sadness that gripped the nation following this tragic event gave rise to new artistic expressions, illustrating how in death Rabin had been transformed into an abstract symbol and mythic figure. Realizing that healing had to take place among different factions, many Israelis sought shared, nonpartisan forms of expressing their sadness and solidarity, as reflected in the paintings on view in this room.
