When Segall exhibited this painting in the second Group 1919 exhibition, Director Paul-Ferdinand Schmidt
immediately sought to acquire it for the Dresden City Museum.
In the painting, Segall used severely muted blue, yellow, and violet huesóthe trio of colors he turned into a virtual signature of his Expressionism. This painting was exhibited in the 1937 Degenerate Art show, a propagandistic exhibition organized by the National Socialists in Munich to degrade modernism by associating avant-garde art movements with so-called
degenerateî elements of race, religion, leftist politics, and liberal sexuality.
