The works of Segallís later years reveal a growing spirituality and a new kind of cultural association, one that cut across specific, culturally defined borders and that was bound by nature. The inspirational quality of this painting is similar to the mood in a photograph
believed to have been taken by Segall near the end of his life, probably from deep within the forests of Campos do Jord?o (see case). The photo depicts an overgrown landscape of trees
and grasses penetrated by luminous sunlight. On the back of this photograph Segall wrote the German word ìUrwald,î which may be a shortened description of ìtropical rainforest,î
but more literally means ìprimeval or virgin forest.î
