The William Petschek Family Music Program

Schoenberg & Kandinsky
First Impressions: The Historic 1911 Concert

Sarah Rothenberg, piano
Mary Nessinger, mezzo-soprano
The Pacifica String Quartet

A fascinating program based on the historic concert in Munich of January 2, 1911 in which Kandinsky encountered Schoenberg\'s music for the first time. Opening remarks from pianist Sarah Rothenberg weave together music and correspondence, setting the stage for performances of the compositions that inspired Kandinsky to declare in his first letter to Schoenberg "...You have realized what I... have so greatly longed for in music...[and] exactly what I am trying to find in my paintings..."

The concert of Schoenberg\'s music will include Selected Songs from Op. 2 and Op. 6; the Second String Quartet, Op. 10, performed by noted mezzo-soprano Mary Nessinger and the Pacifica String Quartet, winners of the prestigious Naumburg and Cleveland Quartet Awards; and Three Piano Pieces, Op. 11.

This concert will be curated, introduced and performed by pianist Sarah Rothenberg whose innovative performances, recordings and writings have often focused on the works of Arnold Schoenberg. Ms. Rothenberg is Artistic Director of Da Camera of Houston. Her recent Schoenberg projects include performaces at Lincoln Center, The Getty Museum and the 92nd Street Y, as well as in Amsterdam and Brussels. Her most recent CD is Shadows and Fragments: Brahms and Schoenberg Piano Works 1892-1911.

This concert has been funded by the William Petschek Family Endowment.
