THEME:
STAR SHRINES

The most varied discussion of Jews and the entertainment media centers on famous performers. For their fans, stars can become objects of worship, of obsession, of inspiration; they engender complicated, intense relationships that are almost always completely imaginary.

The Jewishness of the Jewish star often becomes part of this relationship — especially, though by no means exclusively, for Jewish audiences. Thus, Entertaining America includes a number of star shrines — several of which are personal expressions, commissioned from contemporary artists (Rhonda Lieberman on Fanny Brice, Ben Katchor on Groucho Marx, Aline Kominsky-Crumb on Betty Boop, Mark Rappaport on John Garfield).

These shrines explore issues related to the Jewishness of particular film and broadcasting celebrities from the silent era to the present. Select from the list of stars below for more.
