				Modernity and nostalgia often collide in Ben Katchor’s color strips appearing in the design magazine Metropolis since 1998. With titles such as Chipped-Cup Inspector and A Date in Architectural History, Katchor’s strips complement the magazine’s exploration of the context of design—economic and environmental, social and cultural, political and technological. Everything in the urban environment—from modernist buildings to gated storefronts to public statuary—becomes a fitting subject for Katchor’s cataloguing of urban relics.
