In 1947, a significant discovery of ancient Jewish texts was made in a cave near the Dead Sea. These and other Dead Sea Scrolls found later have shed light on the major transformations and debates that occurred in ancient worship during the first centuries BCE and CE, that contributed to the development of early Judaism and Christianity. This exhibition will present six Dead Sea Scrolls complemented by objects excavated from the site near where they were found. Three of the scrolls have never been exhibited.

COMIC BOOK CONFIDENTIAL
Film Screening
The Saul and Harriet M. Rothkopf Media Program

Comic Book Confidential is a fun and fascinating documentary that traces the development of the comic book from the very first (Funnies on Parade), in 1933, through counterculture favorites (Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers) to the hippest representatives of the 1980s comic book revival (The Dark Knight Returns).

Historical footage, animation, and montages of comic book art are interwoven with interviews with influential authors and artists of commercial, alternative, and underground comics, including R. Crumb, Will Eisner, Jaime Hernandez, Jack Kirby, Harvey Kurtzman, and Stan Lee. Many read from their works: Marvel master Stan Lee brings Spiderman's money worries to life; Charles Burnes becomes Big Baby; Jack Kirby reenacts the birth of Captain America.

Introduction and post-screening remarks by director Ron Mann. Since his twenties Ron Mann has been making award-winning feature documentaries that focus on alternative and dissent culture. His films include Grass (1999), Twist (1991) and Go Further (2003), which follows actor and activist Woody Harrelson on his "Simple Organic Living Tour." His most recent documentary, Tales of the Rat Fink, screened at the 2006 Toronto International Film Festival. He is currently working on Fungi Film, a feature documentary about mushrooms
