In this three-session workshop inspired by the exhibition Florine Stettheimer: Painting Poetry and taught by artist Shellyne Rodriguez, hone in on Stettheimer’s fierce feminine aesthetics and daring attention to political subject matter while learning new techniques for making art in mixed-media. Using fabric, rhinestones, paint, and various other materials, class participants will consider the ways in which they challenge conventions in their own lives while creating self-portraits in the style of Stettheimer with a contemporary twist.

About the Artist
Shellyne Rodriguez is an artist and activist from the South Bronx, whose work centers on strategies of survival and its varied malleable forms. Her practice endeavors to reimagine these strategies as gestures, narratives, objects, and pictures using a variety of sources and mediums to think and to make. Hers is a decolonial practice rooted in Hip Hop Culture. Shellyne graduated with a BFA in Visual & Critical Studies From the School of Visual Arts and an MFA from Hunter College. She has exhibited her work and projects at various institutions throughout New York and describes her activism not as exceptional but rather as a social responsibility, especially for artists, now more than ever.
